Soldier dies in training accident at Fort Carson

FORT CARSON, Colo. — A soldier died after he was accidentally shot during a training exercise at Fort Carson early Wednesday morning, according to post officials.

Spc. Matthew Turcotte, 20, died around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to post officials. Turcotte was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. He was originally from North Smithfield, Rhode Island, and joined the Army in August 2015. He was assigned to Fort Carson in December 2015. He deployed to Kosovo from March to November 2016.

Post officials said Turcotte was participating in a combined arms live-fire exercise at a southern range when he was accidentally shot. He was given medical aid, but died on the range.

Officials are investigating the cause of the accident.
