Suspect escapes police custody, leads officers on foot chase through Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Police have arrested a wanted man who led officers on two foot chases through Colorado Springs Saturday night.

Police responded to the area of W. Uintah and N. 17th Streets just after 5 p.m. and contacted the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Derek Okazaki.

According to police, a foot chase between Okazaki and several police officers ensued. Okazaki reached a gas station and did not follow officers’ commands to stop.

As a result, he was tasered and taken to a local hospital for a routine evaluation.

Police say when Okazaki arrived at the hospital, he managed to escape and run away.

Thanks to a helpful citizen, Okazaki was taken into custody again after a second foot chase, according to police.

A recruit officer was reported to have suffered a minor injury.

Okazaki was arrested on several misdemeanor and felony warrants on kidnapping, domestic violence, strangulation, drugs and other charges.
