STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. — A bear with a sweet tooth tore off the bumper of a car used to deliver doughnuts in Steamboat Springs, then tried to claw its way through the trunk to get to what smelled so delicious inside.

It happened at the Moose Watch Cafe in the ski town where bears are a common sight.

Kim Robertson, owner of the breakfast and brunch restaurant, said she and her husband woke up Monday to discover the car missing its bumper.

They thought it was hit by another car until they noticed the claw and paw marks.

“That car just constantly smells like a rolling bakery,” Robertson said. “It’s like Winnie the Pooh with honey.”

There were no doughnuts in the car at the time of the break-in.

After ripping off the bumper, Robertson said the bear made an attempt to claw away the insulation in the trunk to get to some sweet-smelling aprons.

Police officer John McCartin told The Steamboat Pilot & Today that he smelled doughnuts while standing outside the damaged vehicle.

In honor of the bear that snatched the bumper, the Moose Watch Cafe is offering an appropriate treat: bear claws.
