Two killed in Highway 115 crash

FREMONT COUNTY, Colo — Two people were killed in a head-on crash on Highway 115 in Fremont County Monday morning.

The Colorado State Patrol said the crash happened just before 4 a.m. at mile marker 24, which is about nine miles north of Penrose. Troopers said a Nissan Sentra was headed southbound in the northbound lane of the highway when it crashed head-on into a Chevy Trailblazer that was headed northbound.

Troopers said both drivers died on the scene.

The Nissan’s driver, 33-year-old Timothy VanHeel of Colorado Springs, was ejected from his car. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

The Chevrolet’s driver, 57-year-old Daniel Picco of Cañon City, was wearing his seatbelt.

Troopers are still trying to determine what caused the crash.

The highway was closed for several hours while crews investigated the crash. It reopened just before 8 a.m.
