Fort Carson’s 4th Engineer Battalion trains at Piñon Canyon

FORT CARSON, Colo. — A FOX21 photojournalist tagged along when the 4th Engineer Battalion trained at the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site near Trinidad Friday.

The 4th Engineer Battalion is a construction company within the military. They build roads and tank craters in preparation for a combat unit to move in.

“We have both the construction side of engineering as well as the combat side of military engineering, where we have to go off and support the actual units that are going to be fighting the enemy,” company commander David Watts said. “So in addition to building roads and airfields, we also give them survivability positions and defensive positions that’ll enable them to better engage the enemy and enable their survivability throughout the duration of an operation.”

The training exercises continued through the weekend, and are crucial to the success of future missions.
