Man killed in southern Colorado Springs crash

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A man was killed in a crash in southern Colorado Springs overnight, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The crash happened just before 1 a.m. on South Academy Boulevard near the Highway 85/87 interchange. Troopers said a Pontiac Montana was broken down on the southbound side of the road. The Pontiac was safely parked on the shoulder, but the driver had gotten out and was standing in the middle lane of South Academy. He was hit by a Subaru Tribeca that was headed southbound in the middle lane.

Troopers said the Subaru driver swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a 60-year-old man from Colorado Springs, was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.

The driver of the Subaru was not injured in the crash. Troopers said he was wearing his seatbelt.

Troopers said speed, alcohol, and drugs are not considered factors in the crash.
