COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The sheriff’s office is investigating after a suspect was fatally shot by Colorado Springs police Tuesday night.

Police say they responded to a home on Illinois Avenue, just off Fillmore Street, around 5 p.m. in search of a suspect wanted on felony domestic violence charges. Officials say a person matching the suspect’s description drove away in a car once officers arrived.

According to authorities, the suspect abandoned the car on Templeton Gap Road and ran away.

He then broke into a home on Elm Meadow View, confronted the occupants with a gun in his hand, then stole their car and sped away as officers continued to pursue him.

CSPD officers forcibly stopped the car near the intersection of Circle Drive and Palmer Park and shots were fired.

The suspect was taken to Memorial Hospital, where he died of his injuries. His identity will be released once the autopsy is completed.

The officers involved were uninjured and have been placed on routine administrative leave in accordance with CSPD policy.

Authorities said there is no threat to the community at this time.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate. Once the Sheriff’s Office has completed their investigation, it will then be given to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
