Give!: DayBreak – An Adult Day Program

WOODLAND PARK, Colo. — DayBreak is the only program of its kind in Teller County, offering a unique service for caregivers and their loved ones.

Charlie Oaks was his wife Helgi’s caregiver for the better part of 15 years. Helgi suffered from Multiple Sclerosis and four strokes before she passed away in August.

Although the last couple months were tough for the couple, Charlie says the profound impact DayBreak had on his wife couldn’t be replaced.

“Her quality of life was greatly enhanced, as was mine,” said Oaks. “It works both ways.”

Oaks is no stranger around DayBreak. For the last 10 months or so, he would bring his wife there.

“Rather than just sitting at home in a chair all day and watching TV and trying to have a conversation with me, she could socialize with people, she could see other people, she had a chance to expand her horizons here at this program,” said Oaks.

The adult day program offers a day off for caregivers and a day out for their loved one.

“Inter-generational, pet therapy, massage therapy, music therapy, we’re stimulating their mind and body and spirit,” said Paula Levy, the Executive Director at DayBreak.

It wasn’t until after a couple months that Charlie realized what kind of impact the daily activities and the staff at DayBreak were having on his wife.

“And out of the clear blue sky Helgi said, “I had a really good time,” and that just blew me away,” he said. “Here’s a lady who hasn’t spoken for months and months and months and then I realized what type of an impact DayBreak had on her quality of life and that made me feel very good.”

Donations from Helgi’s funeral made it possible for the facility to purchase a car.

“We’re able to go on outings and connect them to the community where as if they’re at home with their loved one, they’re probably not getting out,” said Levy.

The non-profit facility does charge a fee and is Medicaid approved. However, they say that’s still not enough to cover costs.
