COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The UCCS community came together Monday night to honor first responders, including the UCCS Police Department and Officer Garrett Swasey.

Sunday marked the one-year anniversary of Swasey’s death. He was killed while responding to the shooting at Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs. He is the first UCCS officer to die in the line of duty.

Monday, before the men’s basketball team’s first home game of the season, a candlelight vigil and moment of silence were held for Swasey.

“We’ve always really been a part of the community here at UCCS, so when we lost Garrett, that was something that affected the whole community, and while we have been continuing in our mourning process, we really wanted to take this opportunity to help the campus in their mourning process as well, to move on after the first year and focus on moving forward,” Marc Pino, interim chief of UCCS police, said.

While the ceremony was meant to remember Swasey and his sacrifice, his family requested that his life be celebrated along with all UCCS police officers and first responders.
