Police: Woman accidentally shoots dog while re-assembling gun

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A woman accidentally shot her dog while she was re-assembling a gun in her garage Thursday evening, according to police.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. at a home on Ashcroft Drive in northeastern Colorado Springs. Police said a woman was re-assembling a handgun when it discharged and hit a family dog. The woman “became distraught” and started cutting herself in the abdomen, according to police.

The dog was taken to an emergency vet, and is expected to survive. The woman was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the incident.
