Fantasy football-style wagering offered in El Paso County

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — If you’re looking to make some quick cash and you enjoy football, you can now bet on it legally.

As of Thursday, fantasy sports wagering at off-track betting sites went into action.

“It’s a pretty exclusive club right now,” said Craig Mondragon, the manager of Post Time.

Post Time in Colorado Springs is now just the fourth place in the country, outside of Nevada, where betters can wager on individual NFL players.

“We offer dog racing and horse racing wagers and now you’re able to bet on professional football players based on a fantasy football concept,” said Mondragon.

Minimum bets are only one to two dollars depending if you wager on win, place or show or exactas and trifectas, similar methods used for betting on horses.

Darren McCray loves sports almost as much as he loves to gamble, and this new opportunity to combine the two means he could see instant cash.

“I’m very excited about it because some of these long shots with these quarterbacks — like I picked a number eight and he’s nine to one right now so I can throw my money big time really fast if he actually win the game tomorrow,” said McCray.

In June, Gov. John Hickenlooper signed a measure into law allowing places like Post Time to offer huge payouts.

“Once they understand and see how much money is paying out, that’s the whole key,” said McCray. “You’re going to get your money in return on what you’re betting into.”

“I think once word gets out that you can make your wager and get paid the same day or a couple days afterwards–it’s more of an instantaneous payoff,” said Mondragon.

For those who want to take a chance and make a bet, McCray said it’s going to take more than just luck.

“You’ve got to have some knowledge of the game I think,” said McCray. “I mean it’s not like you’re playing dogs and playing one, two, three. You’ve got to have some knowledge of these receivers, these quarterbacks and know who they’re playing against, who they’re going against.”

As of right now, only weekend and Monday games can be wagered on. For the time being, all money wagered in Colorado will come from a pool within the state, but that is expected to grow.
