Police arrest man accused of firing shots in Garden of the Gods Park

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. — Police have arrested a man accused of firing shots in Garden of the Gods Park, then leading officers on a chase Thursday night.

Manitou Springs police said around 9:20 p.m., they were asked to help Colorado Springs police and El Paso County deputies with an incident in Garden of the Gods Park. They’d gotten a report about a man firing shots while driving through the park.

When police arrived, they saw a car with an illuminated light bar above the windshield driving through the area. When they tried to pull it over, the car sped away.

A short time later, police spotted the car in a parking lot on El Paso Boulevard and tried to stop it again. The car once again sped away, driving recklessly and disregarding traffic signals, according to police. The car eventually stopped in a parking lot on Manitou Avenue, and the driver jumped out and tried to run away. Police quickly caught the driver, 27-year-old Amon Copeland, and arrested him.

Police said they recovered two guns and several rounds of ammunition. Copeland is charged with driving under the influence, vehicular eluding, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, prohibited use of a weapon, and large capacity magazine.

Police said no one was injured.
