Police arrest knife-wielding man threatening to kill himself, others

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A man was arrested Friday after police found him in public threatening to kill people he randomly came into contact with, according to authorities.

It happened just before 11 a.m. in the 3200 block of East Platte Avenue near Chelton Road.

At the scene, officers found the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Neil Murchison, armed with a knife and threatening to harm himself and others. Police say there were no citizens in the contained area.

For half an hour, officers tried to talk to Murchison and persuade him to surrender. Police say he then covered himself with a sleeping bag he had in his possession and attempted to flee the contained area.

According to police, officers deployed two forms of less-lethal intervention – a taser and 40mm less lethal munitions – to stop him from fleeing. He was taken into custody.

Police say Murchison was treated at a local hospital for several non-life threatening, self-inflicted lacerations.

Once he is released from the hospital, he will be booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center for three counts of felony menacing.

There were no other reported injuries.
