COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The holiday season is finally here and that means Operation Christmas Child Colorado Springs is beginning preparations for National Collection Week.

If you aren’t familiar with the organization, Operation Christmas Child involves volunteers transforming empty shoeboxes into gifts filled with toys, hygiene items, school supplies and more.

The donated gifts will then be delivered around the world to children who are living in the midst of poverty, war, disease or natural disasters.

National Collection Week is from November 14 to November 21, and there are 9 drop-off locations right here in the Springs.

This year, officials hope Colorado Springs and surrounding cities will help toward the 2016 global goal of reaching 12 million children.

“The shoebox gifts donated by Colorado Springs volunteers at these drop-off locations will shine a light of hope to children living in poverty overseas,” said Paul Fischbach, Southwest Regional Director for Operation Christmas Child. “Anyone is welcome to pack a shoebox and help a child facing difficult circumstances to feel loved and not forgotten.”

You can go online and give a suggestion donation of $7 per shoebox and Operation Christmas Child will make a shoebox for you. With this option, you can even follow your box as it makes its trip around the world to its final destination.

If you’d like to take the more personalized route, you can create your own shoebox and fill it with items of your choosing such as school supplies, toys, crafts and even a personal note and photo for the child who receives it.
