CUSTER COUNTY, Colo. — The Junkins Fire has burned 18,403 acres and has reached 85 percent containment according to the latest estimates.
A total 539 personnel are working to contain the fire located 11 miles east of Westcliffe.
Portions of the fire will remain in monitor and patrol status and crews will be gridding and mopping up areas along the northern flank of the fire.
Officials say as the next weather front approaches Sunday night, fire activity will pick up across the interior of the fire but are not expected to cross.
The incident management team said firing operations over the last couple days have had a major positive impact on the fire.
Local residents, hunters and tourists are reminded that smoke may be a problem periodically near the fire.
Officials are reminding drivers to be cautious in the area as reduced visibility on the roads is expected.
