CUSTER COUNTY, Colo. — The Junkins Fire is now 70 percent contained, and all residents with intact homes are allowed to return home.

About 844 people are working to containing the fire. According to the latest estimates, it has burned about 17,675 acres–less than the 18,132 acres reported Tuesday. The reduction in acreage is due to more accurate mapping.

Nine homes and 17 other buildings have been destroyed by the fire, officials said.

No injuries have been reported.

The fire started just after 3 a.m. October 17 in the area of County Road 358 and Junkins Loop. It started when the wind blew a piece off a metal building; that metal piece hit a power pole, knocking the pole down. The power line then hit a barbed wire fence, sparking the fire, according to investigators.

FIRE BAN

Custer County is currently in stage two fire restrictions. No open burning or campfires is allowed on private or public lands in Custer County. Gas and propane stoves are allowed.
