COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Saturday was National Drug Take Back Day.

The DEA collected all types of pills, from old vitamins to opioids like Percocet.

You may not realize just how deadly your old painkillers can be, especially in the hands of kids who may raid your medicine cabinet.

“When it comes to overdoses, it’s actually the top one, but it’s a gateway drug,” Timothy Scott of the DEA said. “Literally what you see is, if you ask any heroin addict, a lot of them started with prescription painkillers, so our purpose is to try and cut that cycle and get it out.”

This is the 12th drug take-back event nationwide. In six years, they’ve collected more than 6.4 million pounds of pills.
