Identities of officers, suspect involved in Kohl’s shooting in Pueblo released

PUEBLO, Colo. — The names of the two Pueblo police officers involved in a shooting at a Kohl’s parking lot have been released.

Corporal John Guerrero and Officer Carl Pagels have been with the department for over 10 years. Both are on paid administrative leave.

The shooting happened Monday, October 10 around 7:30 p.m. on North Elizabeth Street.

The officers were called out to the store to investigate reports of shoplifting.

When they arrived, they spotted a stolen car in front of the store and tried blocking it.

The driver, 22-year-old Jonathan Martinez, hit Officer Guerrero with the vehicle as he tried to get away.

Police opened fire, hitting Martinez, who was rushed to the hospital and then flown to a Denver hospital.

Martinez was wanted on three warrants at the time of the incident for charges including felony identity theft and felony vehicle theft.

The investigation is ongoing.
