Authorities warning Pueblo West residents of burglars posing as contractors

PUEBLO, Colo. — The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office is warning Pueblo West residents of a recent scam involving individuals posing as contractors in order to gain entry to burglarize homes.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the “contractors” claimed they were there to do yard work.

Sheriff’s Deputies responded to calls from Pueblo West residents reporting they were approached by a man named “Billy” who stated he was hired by the Pueblo West Metropolitan District to cut weeds or trim trees on their property.

In one case, the victim said the suspect lured her to the side of her home to look at weeds that needed to be cut. The victim said she observed another man inside a silver SUV parked in front of the home.

After both men left, she noticed over $25,000 in valuables missing from her home.

Authorities are reminding the public to be suspicious of unsolicited contractors and to verify whether the individuals are legitimate before allowing them into your home or on your property.

Officials with Pueblo West Metropolitan District have confirmed there is an official process to notify property owners of any violations. Pueblo West informs residents ahead of time as well as the date and name of the company that would be doing work with an official letter from the Metro District.

If you are skeptical of anyone coming into your home, you are urged to get the individual’s name and physical description, business name and vehicle description with license plate number and report it to the Sheriff’s Office at 719-583-6250.
