Pueblo officers buy groceries for women who fell victim to scammer

PUEBLO, Colo. — The Pueblo Police Department is commending several of its officers for using their own money to buy groceries for two women who were scammed by a man pretending to be a utilities employee.

Police said the scammer is knocking on residents’ doors and claiming he works for the water company. He tells the victims he needs to check their basements for broken or leaking water pipes. The victims let the man into their homes and follow him down to the basement, according to police. When the man leaves, the victims realized they’ve been burglarized, possibly by other people involved in the scam.

Police said the scammers took $100 in grocery money from two elderly victims. A group of Watch I officers collected their own money to cover the victims’ loss.

The scammer is described as a Hispanic man in his 50s, wearing a blue baseball cap and a blue shirt. He drives a pickup truck.

Anyone with information is asked to call Pueblo Crime Stoppers at 719-542-STOP (7867).
