COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — After four years of teaching in career and technical education at Palmer High School, Sean Wybrant has a new title to show off – 2017 Colorado Teacher of the Year.

“This is an awesome responsibility and being able to see students be so excited for me, that’s the way I feel about them everyday so, it’s nice to have that back,” Wybrant said.

He calls it an exciting and humbling honor, knowing he will represent the 48,000 teachers in Colorado.

Wybrant is an 11-year veteran in education and was nominated by a colleague.

“It’s a pretty rigorous application process. The superintendent and principal have to agree to the application and that type of thing. And then they go through and talk to parents, and students and community members and staff members,” said Lara Disney, principal of Palmer High School.

According to the Colorado Department Of Education, Wybrant was chosen because of his dedication and passion for teaching and inspiring students, and pushing them to prepare them for the world after high school.

It’s where he says he wants to stay, but his new title will allow him to learn more.

“Over the next year, what I’d like to is I’d like to go around the state of Colorado and gather all of the stories because we have such different populations that are going to different school systems across the state. And they’re in different situations, they’ve got different needs and they have different resources that they’re able to work with. And so, I want to get all of those stories, so that we have a better understanding of what the state of education in Colorado is really like,” Wybrant said.

Wybrant will serve as a teaching ambassador to communities and organizations within the state and nation and will go to represent Colorado and compete for the National Teacher of the Year award.

He will also attend a ceremony at the White House as part of the Teacher of the Year program and go to space camp for a week.
