JDRF One Walk aims to raise awareness for type 1 diabetes research

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — More people bringing awareness to type 1 diabetes took part in an organized walk at Rock Ledge Ranch Saturday.

The JDRF One Walk is the leading global organization that is funding type 1 diabetes research.

Type 1 diabetes can strike both children and adults. The disease affects the pancreas and stops it from producing insulin, meaning those affected constantly have to monitor their blood sugar level and what they eat.

“When you have type 1 diabetes you kind of feel like you’re on an island,” said outreach manager Kelli Raleigh. “And when you get everybody out in a field and you see everybody wearing their sensors and Dexcom and taking insulin and taking shots, it’s just such a great way to reiterate that you’re not alone in this and we are all fighting this together until there is a cure.”

FOX21’s Jeff Womack and Abbie Burke also came out to emcee and support the event.
