COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Erica Johnson has seen her share of challenges in the construction industry.

“One thing that I’ve found is when I’m in the industry, as a woman, that initially people are going to think, ‘Well, she can’t do it,'” Johnson said.

It’s an idea she hopes to get out of people’s minds, by encouraging more women to get into the field.

“I think every woman has the strength to dominate in male-dominated industry, such as construction. I know since the 1970s, there hasn’t been a lot of movement of females into the industry,” Johnson said.

After starting her business, Jayne of All Trades, in 2010, Johnson had to prove herself, letting others know she’s capable of anything a man can do.

She said it takes strength and confidence.

“I think women are always going to have that uphill battle at least for a little while longer, but the more women who actually embrace it and enter in to the industry, I think the less of a challenge it will become,” Johnson said.

In order to help, Johnson hopes to be a mentor to other women who are also want to break into a male-dominated field.

“If there are any women out there that are interested in entering into the industry, I open my door to them. I want to make sure that if they have questions and want to expand into the construction industry, I’m here to give them any advice I can offer,” Johnson said.

Other companies like Colorado Springs Utilities have also been working to bring in more women into the field. They’re hoping to fill the high demand they’re expecting to see in a few years.
