Lawn-mowing goats return to Bear Creek Park

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Hundreds of hungry goats will be taking over Bear Creek Park starting Sunday.

The Cashmere goats will provide natural fertilizer and perform organic weed control by eating brush and weeds in the area near Bear Creek Community Gardens.

The herd is managed by Lani Malmberg of Goat Green. She said the goats eat about 3 percent of their body weight a day.

The 400 to 500 goats are expected to arrive Sunday and stay through October 7.

County officials remind park visitors to keep their dogs under control while the goats are grazing. Last year, some of the goats had to leave the park early because of altercations with off-leash dogs.

This is the 18th year the goats will provide weed control and fertilization at the park.
