Fort Carson hosts poker ride for suicide prevention

FORT CARSON, Colo. — Hundreds of bikers gathered Saturday for the 3rd Annual Suicide Prevention Motorcycle Poker Ride at Fort Carson.

The goal of the ride is to bring awareness to suicide prevention within our military. The event covers warning signs and aims to end the stigma of mental illness.

According to a study by the Department of Veterans Affairs, 22 soldiers commit suicide every day.

“A lot of times if we can intervene ahead of time and we can be there for them,” participant Kari Ann Smith said. “We can help them to not use this as a last resort, not use this as a means to cry out for help,”

About 300 people came out for the ride.
