Colorado Springs barber shop owner gets big money investment from new show

Ken Risler

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A barber shop in downtown got a big lift from a new Discovery Channel show that aims to help small businesses grow.

As soon as you walk into To The Nines Barber Lounge, you’ll meet Ken Risler, who’s just trying to carve out his slice of the American dream.

Risler is an Army veteran. He opened up his original shop in 2011.

“The roughest part about starting it on my own was just the start up. Not knowing how many people will walk through your door,” said Risler.

In April, he was approached by the Discovery Channel show “Blue Collar Backers,” which brings major investment to small businesses.

“My first thought was I was being catfished. Stuff like that just doesn’t happen,” said Risler.

The show and investment is how he opened up his new shop, but he’s getting more than money from the new investor.

“He’s actually giving you guidance and teaching you more about business. How to market for yourself, how to advertise for yourself. Things you should think about,” said Risler.

Something that makes his shop unique is all of the old school services, like a straight razor shave.

“The one thing that separates a barber from everybody else is the fact that we’re going to put a razor to your face and we’re going to clean you up,” said Risler.

He’s trying to create an old school feel for his shop.

“That’s what barber shops always have been. A place for people to go, hang out, and not just get haircuts and shaves and stuff,” said Risler.

If you don’t have time to come out for a cut and a shave to feel as smooth as a baby’s bottom, tune in to the Discovery Channel on September 25 at 8 p.m. to see the episode featuring Risler.
