Swim beach at Lake Pueblo closed after protozoa found

PUEBLO, Colo. — The Rock Canyon Swim Beach at Lake Pueblo State Park will remain closed until further notice.

The beach was closed Monday because of an abnormal red staining along the shoreline. Biologists at CSU – Pueblo and Colorado Parks and Wildlife determined the stain was a form of protozoa, a single-celled organism with animal-like behaviors. It’s unclear what type of protozoa it is, and whether or not it’s harmful to humans.
