COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A woman is facing arson charges after she was caught setting fire to a mobile home in western Colorado Springs Friday morning, according to police.

Around 8:30 a.m., dispatch got a call about a fire at A-1 Mobile Village, which is off 8th Street just south of Cimarron Street. The caller said a woman had intentionally started a fire on the front porch of a mobile home, and tried to start another fire in the kitchen.

Two police officers overheard the call and went to the scene. When they arrived, the woman was standing in front of the burning home, holding several lighters. The officers arrested the woman, 54-year-old Sherie Hayes, and evacuated three people who had been inside the home.

The officers then got a fire extinguisher from their car and used it to put out the fire, which had begun to spread to the railings and roof of the home. Neighbors also helped put out the fire, according to police. When firefighters arrived, they put the fire out completely.

Police determined Hayes had turned on the kitchen stove, causing items to catch fire. She then went to the porch with a lighter and lighter fluid and started the fire there.

Hayes is charged with first-degree arson.

Police said no one was injured.
