Fugitive arrested after climbing tree in Colorado Springs

ALAMOSA, Colo. — A fugitive who tried to avoid authorities by climbing a tree in Colorado Springs has been arrested.

Lane Scott Malouff, 30, climbed a tree on Sunday afternoon and after a nearly 6-hour standoff, was taken into custody.

A warrant was out for Malouff on charges related to third-degree assault, violation of a restraining order, child abuse, criminal attempt second-degree murder and domestic violence.

Authorities were first made aware of Malouff on June 21 when they arrived at a residence in the 1800 block of Edison Avenue between 17th and 20th Streets in Alamosa.

Officers at the scene said they encountered a woman yelling for help and after an investigation was conducted, police said Malouff had assaulted the mother of his two children, threatened her with a weapon and attempted to strangle her before fleeing the scene. She sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Additionally, they found three children inside the residence at the time of the assault; they were not harmed.

Malouff is currently being held at the El Paso County Detention Center on a $150,000 bond.
