COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A Colorado Springs police K9 helped track down a man accused of assaulting a police officer Monday night.

Police said the incident happened around 8:45 p.m. near Henry Elementary School, which is just off Palmer Park Boulevard. Officers went to the area to investigate a disturbance involving some teenagers. An officer was interviewing the teens when a man approached, grabbed the officer by his shirt, and tried to throw him to the ground. A fight ensued, and several punches were thrown. The officer then pepper sprayed the suspect, and he ran south into a trailer park.

Officers surrounded the area and brought in a K9 to find the suspect, later identified as Gregory Louis Herring. As the K9 approached Herring, he jumped over a fence. He ran east and encountered another officer, who tased him and arrested him.

Herring was charged with second-degree assault on a peace officer.

Police said the officer involved in the fight sustained minor injuries.
