FORT CARSON, Colo. — A grass fire that burned 720 acres on a training range this week was sparked by exhaust from a tank, according to Fort Carson officials.

The fire started on Sunday around 6 p.m. in rough terrain on the training range. There was no live fire training going on in the area at that time. Investigators determined the fire was caused by the “extremely hot” exhaust of an M1A1 Abrams battle tank while soldiers were conducting maneuver training in dry vegetation.

The fire is 95 percent contained as of Friday morning.

There were no threats to people or structures.
