COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Investigators say a house fire that damaged $87,500 worth of property was caused by a child playing with fire near bushes outside the home.

The fire started around 2:20 p.m. July 7 at a home on Osgood Road, in the area of Palmer Park Boulevard and Murray Boulevard. Everyone inside was able to escape the home safely. It took 40 firefighters to put out the fire. One sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Investigators determined the fire started when a child was misusing fire outside the house and started some bushes on fire. Heat from the bush fire caused nearby windows to break, and the fire spread into the home.

Firefighters said about 20 percent of the home was damaged.
