COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A man climbed through a window and sexually assaulted a Colorado Springs woman at her home Sunday night, according to police.

It happened around 11 p.m. at a home on Cheyenne Boulevard at Lorraine Street in southwestern Colorado Springs. The victim told police a man had come into her home through a window while she was asleep. She awoke to find him sexually and physically assaulting her.

The victim told police she “tried screaming” but the suspect’s left hand was covering her mouth and “used his right arm and placed it around her neck,” causing her to lose consciousness.

The woman was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police affidavits say “her neck was hurting and had a raspy voice.”

She had “a bite mark on her upper left shoulder, a mark on her face and redness on her neck.”

Police said the victim did not know the suspect.

According to police reports, police found damage to the window sill in the bathroom “consistent with someone climbing through the window.”

That’s where police found a palm print leading them to identify the suspect as Gary Vernon Powell, 45, of Colorado Springs.

Police said Powell is a registered sex offender with prior convictions for burglary and sexual assault. He is now in jail on charges of sexual assault, first-degree assault, and first-degree burglary.

Police are now trying to determine if Powell is a suspect in any other crimes. If you have any information that may help the investigation, you’re asked to call police at 719-444-7000, or Crime Stoppers at 719-634-7867 (STOP).
