Colorado Bureau of Investigation helping local authorities probe Fremont County incident

FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. — Local authorities have requested assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to investigate an incident where a deputy discharged a firearm at a suspect near Cañon City on Sunday, July 10.

Police contacted the driver of a suspicious vehicle on Skyline Drive just after 2 a.m. on Sunday. During contact, police say 52-year-old Edward Tracy Abeyta of Cañon City nearly struck a responding officer with his vehicle as he attempted to flee the area.

According to authorities, a vehicle pursuit was initiated at Skyline Drive and ended at Temple Canyon Road where the vehicle slid off the road.

Police said as they ordered Abeyta out of his truck, he pointed a handgun at deputies. In response, a Fremont County deputy discharged his weapon; he did not strike Abeyta.

Abeyta then turned the gun on himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deputy who discharged his weapon is on paid administrative leave while the CBI investigates the incident, as mandated by Fremont County Sheriff’s Office policy.
