One dead after fatal crash in Fremont County

FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. — One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 50 near milepost 277 this morning.

According to Colorado State Patrol, a 2003 Dodge Dakota was traveling eastbound on Highway 50 when a 1988 Peterbilt semi-tractor pulling a loaded trailer turned right onto eastbound Colorado 50 from a private driveway ahead of the Dodge. As the semi-tractor was accelerating, the Dodge continued east and collided with the rear of the trailer.

After impact, the Dodge came to rest on its wheels in the roadway, while the semi-tractor was driven to a stop on the eastbound shoulder.

The driver of the Dodge, 68-year-old Robert Benson of Canon City, sustained fatal injuries. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the semi-tractor, 31-year-old Dustin Gouty of Pueblo, was wearing his seatbelt and was uninjured in the crash.

Alcohol and / or drug use is not considered to be a contributing factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
