“Super bacteria” present in some of Rio’s waterways ahead of Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — The Olympics are just around the corner and Rio is dealing with another obstacle, in addition to Zika virus concerns and lagging ticket sales.

According to CNN, Brazilian scientists have discovered a drug-resistant bacteria at some of the city’s beaches.

The lead researcher told CNN the “super bacteria” entered Rio’s waterways when sewage from local hospitals were channeled into the bay.

Several beaches – including Flamengo and Botafogo – tested positive for the bacteria. Both border Guanabara Bay, where the Olympic sailing events will take place.

The Summer Olympic Games begin on August 5.
