Fort Carson soldier identified as victim in fatal ATV accident

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Officials have confirmed that the man killed in an ATV accident on Sunday was a Fort Carson soldier.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 26-year-old Sgt. Miguel Diaz.

Diaz belonged to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. He entered into the Army in March 2009 and was deployed to Afghanistan from July 2010 to April 2011. In December 2014, he arrived at Fort Carson.

Over the course of his 7-year service with the military, Diaz was recognized with many accolades, such as two Army Achievement Medals, a NATO Medal, and an Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star.

He was originally from Brooklyn, New York.

Officers responded to the scene of the accident which occurred off-road near the intersection of Mesa Ridge Parkway and Autumn Glen Avenue on Sunday, July 3 around 2:15 p.m. Medical personnel responded and began life-saving efforts but were unsuccessful.

The cause and manner of his death will be released at a later date pending toxicology results.
