Florida officials extend state of emergency in some counties due to toxic algae

Toxic algae in Florida / FOX21 News

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — Officials are extending the state of emergency in Martin County, Florida due to toxic algae plaguing shorelines.

Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency for several counties last week because of the hazardous algae bloom on some of Florida’s southern rivers and beaches.

The toxic algae can be harmful to plants, animals and people. If ingested, it could cause nausea and vomiting; if the green slime is touched, it could cause rash or even hay fever.
