UCCS, Penrose-St. Francis developing new sports medicine center

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — UCCS and Penrose-St. Francis are pursuing a joint effort to develop a state-of-the-art sports medicine and performance center here in Colorado Springs.

They made the announcement Friday after signing a letter of intent this week. The goal is to develop nationally recognized programs for athletes of all skill levels, as well as people who want to maintain active lifestyles.

The future UCCS Sports Medicine and Performance Center is part of the Colorado Springs City for Champions project. It will include human performance testing and training, biomechanics, medically-based fitness, research, and much more.

Those behind the effort said it’s a perfect fit for Colorado Springs, and it will become a destination for people from all over.

“It will give us the opportunity to take sports performance, sports conditioning, and rehabilitation after an injury to a new height in Colorado Springs, and again serve as a tertiary destination for the much larger region that we jointly serve,” Penrose-St. Francis President and CEO Margaret Sabin said.

The two organizations will host a celebration June 30. The innovative center is scheduled to open in December 2019.
