The victim has been identified as Daryl Ritz, 58. The coroner’s office has not yet determined how Ritz died.

Ritz worked for the Colorado Springs Fire Department from 1980 until he retired in 2013. He was promoted to driver / engineer in 1986, and served much of his career on the HAZMAT team.

We heard from Daryl’s firefighting family at the Colorado Springs Fire Department on Tuesday and spoke to them about the man they will forever remember.

For 27 of his 33 firefighting career years, he was a driver and engineer on the fire engine.

“He was one of those guys that, no matter what the call was, when he went out the door he was out to serve,” said fellow firefighter Randy Royal.

Even outside his job at the station, he still managed to serve in other ways.

Ritz built classic cars to be raffled off, and made sure the money went on to help child burn victims.

“He raised hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years that he was involved with it – and that’s probably one of the proudest things he was involved with,” said Royal. “For him [the most important thing] was how much money they raised for the burned children across the state.”

He’s described as a family man with a huge heart.

“Right now that’s where our thoughts are – with his family,” said Royal. “We ask that for the public to give them their privacy while they go through this time and keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

His comrades at the fire department plan to organize a memorial service for Ritz, but no information on the memorial has yet been released.
