Downtown jeweler closing its doors after more than 40 years

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Loved in the community for years, a downtown Colorado Springs gem is packing up and shutting down for good.

Charles and Janice Zerbe of Zerbe Jewelers have been a part of the downtown area for over four decades now. They said it hasn’t just been about owning a business, but more about getting to know anyone who walked through the door.

Medical issues are the reason they need to say goodbye.

“I’ve got a little back issue that I need to take care of and it would take me out of here for an unknown period of time,” said Charles.

Charles didn’t want to leave the business up to his wife, Janice. The couple is touched by the outpouring of well wishes.

“I just tell people not to cry,” said Janice. “I’ve had people come in crying and you make me cry and then we’re all crying, and it’s not that we’re sad to move on. We are happy to move on to the next part of our life.”

Charles said he will miss being a close part of so many lives.

“We marry people, we celebrate their children, baby gifts,” said Charles.

Now will see Charles and Janice close up shop as they prepare for what’s next.

“We’ll get Charles taken care of first then maybe a little vacation which is possibly overdue,” said Janice.

The store at 212 North Tejon Street is having a huge sale to try to get rid of their inventory.
