Volunteers gather to spruce up Red Rock Canyon

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Earth Day celebrations were held throughout the weekend in Colorado Springs. Sunday, Red Rock Canyon Open Space got some special treatment.

The group Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado brought in several hard workers to spruce up the area. Last summer, it was shut down after being heavily damaged by floodwaters. The group is getting rid of weeds and planting new flowers, bushes, and trees purchased by the city of Colorado Springs. They’re also working to restore the trails.

“A lot of people love to recreate in Colorado,” volunteer Allison Bell said. “That’s why they move here. That’s why we live here. But they don’t know all the work that it takes to keep our lands sustainable and healthy. So it’s great to have volunteers out so that they can learn about that and spread the word.”

Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado is just getting started. They say they have around 60 public projects that began this month and will continue through October.
