COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Since the beginning of April, downtown Colorado Springs has seen five new businesses open up.

One business opened a second location.

“People kept asking us, ‘When are you going to open a store downtown? When are you going to open a store downtown?'” said Jim Ciletti, co-owner of Hooked on Books.

That makes a total of 12 new shops downtown since January.

“Compared with last year we’re about double where we were for the springtime in terms of number of businesses that are opening. And then compared with 2014, even more with that,” said Sarah Harris, director of Business Development and Economic Vitality for the Downtown Partnership.

Local business owners say it’s a prime spot.

“I’ll be able to track a lot of tourists because, not just my store, there’s a lot of different stores where tourists are attracted,” said Probin Shrestha, owner of My Colorado Store.

“Colorado Springs downtown is so alive that it’s a different city, a different town than what it used to be,” Ciletti said.

The Downtown Partnership said each year they see a little more growth.

“Especially with still recovering from the recession, we’ve just seen our numbers in the last few years have been really starting to grow,” Harris said.

More businesses means less space, especially in the core of downtown. But the Downtown Partnership said future projects in the next two years will hopefully add more retail space. They said they had 23 businesses that opened permanently by the end of 2015.
