Colorado Springs military moms and daughters honored at special tea

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Armed Services YMCA hosted its annual Joyce Bullard Mother Daughter Princess Tea Sunday.

Mothers and daughters of service members wore tiaras and sipped tea, all while being treated like royalty.

“We want to pamper them, we want to make sure that they understand that they are bedazzling, that they are princesses and beautiful,” said partner director Laurel Anderson.

“It’s wonderful to see the look on their faces, to get treated like a princess here,” said Aaron Termaine, a retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Army.

The heavy burden these families take for their loved ones in the service can be stressful and especially tough with children.

“It’s rough,” said Melanie Villanueva, a military spouse. “Sometimes I feel like a single mother, but I’m supporting my husband. My kids, they keep me busy.”

As a mother of five, Villanueva said it’s events like these that remind her she doesn’t have to do it alone.

“It shows a lot actually that we have support other than the military,” she said.

“They definitely thank us so much because they do feel supported and so we’re so grateful because then we’ve accomplished our mission of love,” said Anderson.

Face painting, doing arts and crafts and even taking pictures with princess Elsa were just a few of the activities moms and daughters could do, but more importantly, it’s about showing these families they have a community that supports them.

“I’ve been in the Army 29 years,” said Termaine. “I’ve never been in a community like Colorado and Colorado Springs that truly and genuinely and sincerely supports our service members and families like we do here.”
