New bill could change concealed carry law for military members

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — There’s a bill circulating through the state legislature that would change the minimum age that military members could get a concealed carry permit.

Right now in Colorado you have to be 21 years old, have licensed training with handguns, and pass a background check.

This bill would change the minimum age to 18 for members of the military.

The bill passed in the state senate by a 21 to 14 vote with support from both sides of the aisle.

The Coloradans for Civil Liberties supports the bill. They said the law just makes sense.

“When we have a gun bill that has bipartisan support that sounds like more of a common sense law,” said Laura Carno, spokeswoman for the group.

“Well, I was a little bit surprised. It seems like gun control is supposed to be getting more strict right now,” said Monica Adler.

While some aren’t sure if they like the bill or not, supporters said it’s important to look at whom this is impacting the most.

“We are dealing with among the best trained and among the most law abiding citizens in our country and they should have that right to defend themselves,” said Carno.

If this bill passes, Colorado would join two other states with this exact rule and nine other states that allow 18-year-olds to have a concealed carry permit.

“It’s not really a big change. It’s a pretty small population, but when you look at things like San Bernardino, the Planned Parenthood shooting, we need more good guys around with guns who are trained,” said Carno.

“I don’t typically agree with more guns helping violence, but all and all I guess I don’t think this is a situation where it’s creating a population of people that are going to be hurtful with guns,” said Adler.

The bill now heads to the House. If it passes there, it’ll go to the governor’s desk for potential signing.
