CDOT to widen Powers Boulevard between Fountain and Platte

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Initial work is underway to widen and improve safety along Powers Boulevard (State Highway 21/U.S. 24) between Fountain Boulevard and Platte Avenue and on Airport Road between Sand Creek and Stewart Avenue.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project consists of adding a third lane in each direction of Powers, asphalt paving, and new lighting. Work also includes:

  • Installing new traffic signals at the Airport Road and Aeroplaza Drive intersections.
  • Adding nearly 1,400 feet of sound walls on the west side of Powers, between Airport Road and Aeroplaza Drive.
  • Realigning and reconstructing the Airport Road intersection.
  • Removing a portion of old Airport Road and minor widening of the Stewart Avenue intersection.

Daytime work is taking place outside of traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, drivers should anticipate overnight lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. For the duration of the project, shoulder closures should be expected on Powers, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, between Fountain and Platte and along portions of Airport Road.

SEMA Construction, Inc., of Centennial is the contractor for the $4.8 million project. It is scheduled for completion in fall 2016.
