Cannabis clubs offer unique reward for community service

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Two weeks ago, Colorado Springs city council members voted to ban cannabis clubs and ordered those that are currently open to shut down within the next eight years.

But now, some of them are fighting back, hoping to show they can make a positive impact on the community.

Steve Pacheco, the owner of The Pothole cannabis club, is bringing over 100 people together to clean up Colorado Springs.

And for their hard work, he’s offering a unique reward.

“The law is the law and whether you’re my friend or a stranger off the street, if you’re 21 years of age or older, I can give you weed,” Pacheco said.

For every bag of trash you collect, Pacheco will give you a free joint.

He said it’s one way to show people that cannabis clubs can improve a city.

“We’ve done many positive things in the neighborhood. We just don’t make it public,” he said.

“There’s positive things that come out of these lounges. I’ve always met wonderful people,” volunteer Adolph Estrada said.

Sure, the marijuana is the motivation, but everyone involved says they’re happy to help.

Pacheco rolled up 300 joints to hand out, plus he’s offering free lunch to everyone who came out.

It’s a good chunk of cash that’s coming straight out of his pocket, but he says it’s worth it.

“It’s going to cost me something, but it’s all for a good cause,” Pacheco said.

And with a turnout as big as the one they had Sunday, Pacheco said he hopes to do even bigger community service projects in the future.

He added seven other cannabis clubs were also offering free joints to people to help clean up other parts of the city.
