COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Wednesday marked the launch of a statewide listening tour.

“We’ll have open discussion with moms about what they care about and what issues they’re seeing, and what issues they want our legislature, and our state leaders, and our community leaders to tackle,” said Heidi Ganahl, founder of Moms Fight Back.

Ganahl founded the nonprofit as a way to connect mothers across the state and tackle the issues they feel don’t often get addressed.

“I’ve seen a lot of issues pop up, specifically my daughter went through a really tough issue, my oldest one, in high school. And it prompted a discussion around, where do moms go to talk about really tough stuff?” Ganahl said.

Discussions center on sexual abuse, bullying, drug abuse and school and internet safety.

According to MFB, abuse and neglect impacts more than 37,000 children in Colorado each year. More than 10,000 become victims. Since 2007, 175 children in Colorado have died as a result.

“People that want to prey on our youth and our vulnerable populations, they know exactly where to find them. They find them in our middle schools, and they find them in our high schools, at malls, and maybe downtown areas where kids like to hang out,” said Deborah Manzanares, a concerned mother.

Ganahl said the nonprofit gives Colorado moms a voice in their communities.

“I think today’s a different time and us moms are trying to figure out how to tackle a lot of this stuff that our kids are facing. And the internet plays into that, social media; that’s one way to get moms together and that will be a big part of what we do, is the digital world and getting moms talking on social media about these issues and how to solve them,” Ganahl said.

MFB will hold 25 free public forums over the next six months.
