Fort Carson community observes Black History Month

FORT CARSON, Colo. — The Fort Carson community honored Black History Month last week at the Elkhorn Conference Center.

The theme for this year’s observance was “A Century of Black Life, History, and Culture.” Local leaders and military veterans highlighted the significance and importance of African-Americans in the military, and spoke about early leaders of the civil rights movement.

“The past helps us move forward and we need that for this next generation to really understand what it took to give them the rights that they are living by today,” activist Shirley Martinez said.

The speakers in attendance also spoke about their life experiences and shared stories of inspiration and power.
