Sierra boys basketball team 14-0 in Metro League for second year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The boys’ varsity basketball team at Sierra High School is riding high again, after finishing 14-0 for the second season in a row in the Metro League.

Now they have their eyes focused on winning a state title again.

“We’re ready for the playoffs. We are focused,” junior point guard CJ Jennings said.

Coming into this basketball season, the Stallions were labeled as a young team.

“Last year’s team filled with seniors. This year’s team had two returning starters, one senior one, one junior, and the rest are up from the JV squad this year,” Stallions head coach Terry Dunn said.

All year, the Stallions proved their skill level to their opponents.

“We’re a good team and we feel like we can make some noise in the playoffs so we are ready for it,” senior point guard Kion Wingo said.

They’re showing that experience doesn’t always matter on the basketball court.

“A lot of people doubt us and our league and if we could just get to state and win it that would change everyone’s perspective of it,” Wingo said.

The boy’s basketball team hasn’t won a state title since 2010, and they’re ranked number two going into the playoffs.

“I think its fool’s gold because I think on any given night I think anyone can win or lose,” Dunn said about rankings.

Even with the postseason play looming overhead, Jennings said his love for the game comes down to one thing.

“Getting buckets. I just like getting buckets. It’s fun,” Jennings said.

But going into the playoffs, Sierra will follow the same winning formula they’ve used all season.

“Come out and play defense, defense, defense, defense. Defense wins games. Offense sells tickets,” Wingo said.

Sierra will play Wheat Ridge this Friday at home at 7 p.m.
